Simi Valley, CA, culture

Simi Valley has a unique history and culture. Although it hasn’t always been called Simi Valley, the area has been inhabited for thousands of years. Two settlements known as Shimiji and Ta’apu were split between a group of Native Americans known as the Chumash. They occupied the land until the late 1700s when Spanish explorers claimed it. The region has had numerous owners over the years, and it has gone by many different names, including “Simiopolis” for a brief period. A few years after California became a state in 1850, the area was sold to Thomas A. Scott, the Philadelphia and California Petroleum Company owner. Since then, Simi Valley has been incorporated and has grown to a population of over 127,000 residents.

Library Breaks Ground on Charters of Freedom Monument

The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library & Museum celebrated President’s Day with live music, president reenactors, and a groundbreaking ceremony for its new Charters of Freedom Monument. The outdoor monument will feature engravings of the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, the Constitution, and a case on Civil Rights. The library will be the first site in California to display the Charters, with a final unveiling planned for July 4th. Foundation Forward, a nonprofit that installs life-size replicas of the Charters of Freedom, intends to create more monuments across the country, aiming to place one in all 3,142 counties, boroughs, and parishes in the United States. The goal is to honor military veterans, first responders, and the nation.
